Yoga

Described by the ancient Indian scriptures as the communion of individual soul (Jivatman) with the Universal soul or God (Paramatam), 'Yoga' the ancient Indian discipline is highly relevant in the modern day context. Yoga is a system of exercises for physical and mental well being. It combines stylized poses with deep breathing and meditation. The term Yoga is itself derived from a Sanskrit word meaning to join together. Yoga was developed about five thousand years ago. The first written description was found in 'Yoga Sutras', attributed to Patanjali. With tension and stress becoming a part of our daily life 'Yoga' enables us to achieve self-realization in a systematic manner. By helping the union of the body with the mind and the mind with the soul, it creates the ultimate symphony of life. The ultimate aim in Yoga is to unite the human soul with the universal spirit.

Benefits of Yoga:
This ancient health and fitness practice provides both physical and mental therapy. It considers ageing as largely an artificial condition, caused mainly by autointoxication or self-poisoning. By keeping the body parts clean and well-lubricated, cell deterioration can be greatly reduced. To get the maximum benefits of yoga one has to follow three main guidelines i.e. practice of Asanas, Pranayama and Yoga Nidra.

With the regular practice of asanas we can control our cholesterol level, reduce weight, normalize blood pressure and improve cardiac performance. Asanas harmonize our mental energy flow by clearing any blockages in the subtle body, leading to mental equilibrium and calmness.

Pranayama is a technique wherein it re-educates our breathing process, helps to release tensions and develop a relaxed state of mind. It balances our nervous system, reduces the need for sleep and encourages creative thinking. Increasing oxygen to our brain, improves mental clarity, alertness and physical well being. Yoga Nidra is a form of meditation. Performed while lying on the back in the Shavasana pose, it relaxes the physiological and psychological systems. This technique completely rejuvenates the body and mind, giving a sense of well being. Since ages Rishikesh, the land of Yoga, has been a spiritual center for learning yoga.

Yoga therapy in its present form is a new discipline, created by the marriage of traditional yoga with modern medicine. By tailoring yoga practices to individual needs, whilst taking medical considerations into account, yoga therapy is more effective than general yoga practice as a safe means of treating medical conditions.

Yoga therapy is applicable to a great variety of conditions, including anxiety, low back pain, arthritis, hypertension, heart conditions, hyperventilation, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, multiple scelorosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Yoga therapy can also promote positive health for pregnancy and childbirth, mothers and babies, children, reproductive health in women and men, and the elderly.

Yoga Therapy cultivates body/mind integration and a sense of harmony with life. It promotes the innate healing resources of the body, helping restore the proper functioning of the various bodily systems.

Medical research provides increasing evidence that yoga therapy is effective.
